What To Do While Your Garden Sleeps
What To Do While The Garden Sleeps
While your garden sleeps for the winter, you have time to focus on tidying up around your porch and inside your house. Both have undoubtedly been neglected and piled up with random clippings, seeds saved haphazardly, and seed packets that were never put away. Don’t be ashamed, it is the life of a busy gardener.
Get Started
I like to start with my porch while there are still some warm hours in the days of autumn. Gather up any cuttings that still need to be taken inside to collect seeds from or be dried for herbs. Collect pots and trays. Clean out any GreenStalks if you have them. Get that dirt swept off. Take a look around and breathe in the autumn air while you admire your hard work.
Caring for Garden Pots and Trays
The next step is one I skip until Spring personally, but this is a good opportunity as well. Take the time to not only dump out your pots and trays but also sanitize them. This ensures you do not have any soil disease or pests hanging around for the next season. If you do this now during autumn, you will thank yourself for not waiting like me to do it when snow is still falling and your hands are too cold to deal with water outside. You will be happily prepared to start your seeds without any of the fuss.
Garden Tool Care
You don’t want to leave your garden tools out in the elements, so be sure to round them up. Clean your garden tools before putting them away. Store them in the garage, shed, or basement. It is recommended to store any garden nozzles in a heated space or your basement at the very least to avoid the plastic from cracking (ask me how I know). You may also want to store any loose trellising away as well, such as tomato cages, so they are not blowing around in the garden without the weight of plants to keep them in the ground.
Now that you have tidied up, take a moment to appreciate that your garden tasks are complete and take a much needed break. Go outside and muse over your fresh canvas and dream about what to plant next.
