How to Decide What To Grow Next
How to Decide What To Grow Next
Are you new to growing?
Your seed list may be a bit all over the place as a new gardener while you explore the many varieties there are to choose from. This is a good time to try new things and have fun. I would, however, caution you to make sure you are buying things you are actually going to eat. Let’s talk about how to decide what to grow next.
An easy way to structure your seed buying is to write out a Grocery List. Start with the meals you make weekly, write out the ingredients. Now on a separate list, write out only the vegetables that go into all of your meals. This is what your family eats. It doesn’t mean that you can’t try new things, but if your family absolutely hates beets, they are likely a waste of space for your garden. Use your list as a guideline while you decide on what seeds you want to buy.
The returning gardener.
By now you have gone through at least one season of growing and harvesting your own food. You have some insight as to what did and did not work for you.
As you pick your seeds for the next season, I want you to be thinking of the following questions.
- What did well in your garden?
- What did poorly in your garden? (Pests, disease, cracking, etc.)
- What varieties did you enjoy the most?
- What varieties did you not like at all?
- What would you do differently?
Remember, just because something didn’t work out in your most recent garden season doesn’t mean failure. Not trying, that is failure.
Whether you’re just starting out or are returning to the garden for another season, remember to have fun in this stage. Always buy something new to try and always buy something fun.
You should plant things that encourage you to be in the garden, whether that be sunflowers, your favorite annual, or even a pepper plant just because it is variegated … who doesn’t love variegated plants?
